I visited Zanzibar in 1996, at the age of 61. Now ten years have passed. My father Bhikhubhai G.Naik came to Zanzibar in 1937. At the Govt. Boys Secondary School when I was a toddler of 2 from Surat Dist. in India. Most of the Hindus in East Africa were from Saurashtra and Kutch districts of Gujarat. I finished my Cambridge School Certificate in Dec.1952, and then proceeded to N. Rhodesia (Zambia) to get training in the business world. During the Secondary School days, I played cricket for the Hindus together with Harji Mawji, Gajendra Doshi, late Champak Shah, Shashi and Rasik Gandhi. I remember Kakai, and his brother Aku,and Baker Tejani was with us in the school cricket team. I very vividly remember some popular Ithnashery cricketers like Golo Mshamba, Sherali Ndege, and wicket keeper Nooraly Jessa. I very well remember the times Easter Holidays when the Dar teams visited Zanzibar and vice versa. The name FHR comes to mind. While in Zambia I played together with the two Patel brothers of Tanzania --CD and RD. Together with CD Patel, Yusuf Patel (Pathan), I was amongst the first 5 non whites to play for Zambia in 1968 Quadrangular in Nairobi, and in 1972 was the Vice Capt. of the team. Emigrated to USA in 1976 and settled in Dallas since then.

Your brothers photo pages are very nice - photos well taken with details. His photos are all taken from the similar angles that I have taken from. My three younger brothers - Mahendra ,Ramesh and Subodh ,all studied at GSS. I think Subodh (born 1949) was with Abdulrazak. Since you studied at the Agakhan School, near Majestic Cinema , the direct contact was not there. In your photographs, I saw Ibrahim Jaffer. He came here in Dallas in the early 80s,when his son was married. He was in Dubai then, and he was our class mate. We had stayed for a while in Hurumzi Street near VS Patel, and opposite VH Kapadia. Since 1947 or so we stayed at our house in SokoMohogo Street, and sold it around 1966 and my father after retiring worked for the Hindu School for while and left for India in 1968. Sheni Lakha used to come to our house for studies, and his brother Abdul Rasul now in Nairobi was my classmate. We have two sons and one is involved in business --Printed Circuit Boards prototype manufacturing and assembling them. (From design work to the final Board) , and the older one is in Real Estate development -Purchasing raw land and developing it and constructing Franchised Hotels and Motels - likes of Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Staybridge Suites etc. For the past 8 years we are going to India in Nov. and returning at the end of January- Spend 30 to 45 days in meditation -- http://www.dhamma.org

Will talk to you soon. My phone No. is 469 366 7060.

Thanks, Kwaherini,

Surendra B.Naik
