Lindi Notes - Family - Settlement Stories of Early Migrants

Tanganyika’s fishing village of Mji Mwema was a prominent village where only two Indian families resided – one of them was Haji Sachoo Peera.

His full name was Sachedina Pirani Mawji but the childhood nickname of Sachoo Peera took hold. He was born in Kutch- Mandvi in 1836. At the age of 3 he migrated to Zanzibar with his parents. While traveling to Kilwa Kisiwani at the age of 5, his parents drowned and he was taken care by his uncle - masa in Zanzibar.

He traveled a lot during his youth. In 1875, he settled in Dar es Salaam which was a village at the time.

Haji Sachoo Peera, Versi Advani and Nasser Mawji formed a tripartite which gave a lot of services to the community both in the religious and social fields. The three were famous for their selfless service.

Haji Sachoo Peera and his two sons Noormohamed and Abdulrasul had excelled in business and had earned a good reputation with the German government at that time due to their community services. The German government had allowed only three Indian families to hoist their flag on their buildings and all three of them were Ithnaasheries. They were; Ali Walli & Co., Jaffer Somji & Co., and Haji Sachoo Peera.

The first Imambara and mosque of Dar es Salaam were a result of efforts by Haji Sachoo Peera assisted by Versi Advani and Nasser Mawji. Haji Sachoo Peera and his sons had been observed by the laborers to have carried stones during the construction work. The cemetery which is in the centre of the city of Dar es Salaam is also a result of generosity of Haji Sachoo Peera.

Today, members of community remember him through his grandson Gulamali Abdulrasul Sachoo. The family has been generous throughout till today.

The mosque in Mwanza is a result of generosity of his granddaughter Shehrbanoo Nurmohamed Sachoo.

Mr Sachoo Gulamali Abdulrasul, who has been praised by the ‘Rahbar’ Monthly as an outstanding community worker, and who is a Councillor of Dar Jamat since 1953 and Chairman of Education Board is a great grandson of Sachoo Peera. The family is therefore well known for their services for the community.

Haji Sachoo Peera was well known for his simple living, sweet tongue, honesty and sincerity.  While returning from Ziyarat, he died in Karachi in 1907 at the age of 71. His grave is prominently seen at the entrance of Karachi cemetery.

This family had portello soda factory in Dar for many years and they also had one in Lindi for a very short period in 1960s - managed by Late Baqar Abdulrasul who lived in Lindi.
